GURUGRAM, HARYANA — Former Chief of the Indian Army Manoj Mukund Naravane has reaffirmed the strong bond of trust between the Indian armed forces and the public, stating that the respect enjoyed by the military far outweighs any negativity arising from isolated controversies.

Speaking in Gurugram, General Naravane (Retd.) addressed concerns regarding whether recent controversies could impact public confidence in the armed forces. He dismissed such concerns, asserting that the deep-rooted trust and respect for the Indian military remain intact.

“I think the confidence that the Indian armed forces have and the respect that has always been given by our people far surpasses the kind of negativity that very small issues could generate,” he said, highlighting the enduring relationship between the forces and citizens.

He emphasised that the Indian armed forces are not separate from society but are an integral part of it, reflecting the spirit of the nation. Referring to this connection, he remarked, “Bharatiya Sena, Bharat ki sena,” underscoring that the army belongs to the people of India.

Naravane further noted that the support, respect, and trust shown by citizens play a crucial role in strengthening the morale of the armed forces. According to him, this mutual relationship enables soldiers to carry out their duties effectively, particularly in challenging conditions along the borders.

He said that the confidence reposed by the public gives strength to the forces and motivates them to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and security. The sense of responsibility towards the people, he added, remains a key driving factor for the armed forces.

In a separate remark, the former Army Chief also addressed discussions surrounding interpretations of his book. He stated that individuals are free to interpret content based on their own understanding, but emphasised the importance of considering the larger national interest while doing so.

“Everyone is free to interpret everything as per their own conscience. In doing so, they should see what is good in the overall national interest,” he said, suggesting that responsible and balanced perspectives are essential when engaging with sensitive topics.

Naravane added that if people keep the national interest in mind, it becomes easier to arrive at constructive and meaningful interpretations, reducing the scope for confusion or misrepresentation.

His remarks come at a time when public discourse around national security and the armed forces often attracts widespread attention. Observers note that statements from senior military figures, especially former chiefs, carry significant weight in shaping public opinion.

The former Army Chief’s comments reflect a broader message of unity, trust, and responsibility, both for institutions and citizens. By emphasising the resilience of public confidence in the armed forces, he sought to reassure that isolated issues do not undermine the institution’s credibility.

At the same time, his call for responsible interpretation of issues highlights the importance of balanced public discourse, particularly in matters related to national security and governance.

Experts believe that maintaining a strong relationship between the armed forces and the public is essential for national stability, and Naravane’s remarks reinforce this perspective.

He concluded by reiterating that the Indian armed forces continue to enjoy unwavering support and respect from the people, which remains a cornerstone of their strength and effectiveness.

The statements underline the enduring trust between citizens and the armed forces, while also calling for thoughtful and responsible engagement with issues of national importance.
