The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a draft notification proposing mandatory Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication systems in all newly manufactured vehicles from October 1, 2028. The initiative is aimed at reducing road accidents, improving traffic management, and preparing India for the next generation of connected mobility.
The proposal applies to L, M, and N category vehicles, covering two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars, buses, trucks, and other commercial vehicles.
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication is a wireless technology that enables vehicles to exchange real-time information such as:
- Vehicle speed
- Position and location
- Direction of travel
- Braking status
- Potential collision alerts
By continuously sharing this information, nearby vehicles can warn drivers about potential hazards even when they are not directly visible, helping reduce the risk of accidents.
According to the draft notification:
- From October 1, 2027: Vehicles already equipped with V2V systems must comply with the newly introduced AIS-230 standard.
- From October 1, 2028: All newly manufactured L, M, and N category vehicles will be required to be fitted with compliant V2V communication systems.
The proposed mandate seeks to:
- Improve road safety by reducing collisions.
- Enable early warning systems for drivers.
- Improve traffic flow and congestion management.
- Lay the foundation for connected and intelligent transportation systems.
- Support future autonomous and software-defined vehicles.
Unlike conventional safety systems that rely mainly on cameras and radar, V2V technology allows vehicles to communicate directly with each other.
For example:
- A vehicle several cars ahead brakes suddenly.
- Your vehicle receives an instant wireless alert before the hazard becomes visible.
- The system can warn the driver or trigger safety functions more quickly than relying solely on onboard sensors.
The introduction of V2V communication is expected to offer several advantages:
- Faster collision warnings
- Reduced rear-end crashes
- Better visibility around blind corners
- Improved intersection safety
- More efficient traffic movement
- Enhanced emergency response coordination
The technology is considered an important step toward safer connected mobility in India.
The proposed mandate will require automakers to integrate advanced communication hardware and software into future vehicles.
