GUWAHATI – Following a resounding victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially initiated the process of government formation. In a significant move to streamline the transition, the party’s central leadership has appointed Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda as the Central Observer and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as the Co-Observer for the election of the BJP Legislative Party leader in Assam.
The announcement was confirmed by Assam BJP chief Dilip Saikia, who addressed the media on Tuesday. Saikia stated that the central observers will oversee the crucial meeting where newly elected legislators will formally elect their leader, who is subsequently expected to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of the state.
A Landmark Mandate for the NDA
The 2026 election results have rewritten political history in Assam. For the first time, the BJP has secured a majority on its own, winning 82 seats in the 126-member assembly, comfortably crossing the magic number of 64. The broader National Democratic Alliance (NDA) reached a total of 102 seats, with regional partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) contributing 10 seats each.
This victory marks a “hat-trick” for the NDA in Assam, reinforcing the state as a saffron stronghold in Northeast India. Political analysts credit this performance to the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose governance and strategic campaigning played a pivotal role in consolidating the party’s influence across diverse demographics.
Key Roles for Nadda and Saini
The appointment of heavyweights like J.P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini underscores the importance the BJP central command places on Assam.
- J.P. Nadda: As a former national president and current Union Health Minister, Nadda brings immense organizational experience. His role as the primary observer is to ensure a smooth, consensus-based selection of the legislative leader.
- Nayab Singh Saini: The Haryana Chief Minister’s inclusion as a co-observer signals the party’s intent to utilize leaders who have successfully navigated complex electoral terrains in other states.
Dilip Saikia noted that the meeting of the BJP legislative party will be scheduled at the convenience of the observers and the elected representatives. “At the same time, the leader of the NDA will also be elected. We will inform the public as soon as the final schedule is locked,” Saikia added.
The Road Ahead: Who Will Lead?
While Himanta Biswa Sarma is widely seen as the frontrunner to continue his tenure following the massive mandate, the formal election process is a standard democratic procedure within the BJP. The observers will interact with individual MLAs to gauge the sentiment of the legislative wing before the official announcement.
The opposition, led by the Congress and its allies, faced a significant setback in this election. The Congress tally was reduced to 19 seats, while regional parties like the AIUDF saw their influence drastically diminished.
Focus on Development and Identity
The 2026 campaign was fought on the twin pillars of infrastructure development and cultural identity. From the completion of major bridge projects over the Brahmaputra to the implementation of extensive welfare schemes, the BJP’s “Double Engine Sarkaar” narrative resonated strongly with voters.
As the state prepares for the swearing-in ceremony, the focus now shifts to the composition of the new cabinet. With a solo majority, the BJP has more room to maneuver, though maintaining strong ties with allies like the AGP and BPF remains a priority for long-term regional stability.
The formal meeting of the legislators is expected to take place in the coming days, paving the way for the formation of the third consecutive NDA government in Assam.
