Prime Minister Narendra Modi on National Handloom Day extended greetings to the nation, celebrating India’s rich handloom heritage and acknowledging the invaluable contribution of weavers and artisans who have preserved traditional craftsmanship for generations.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister praised the creativity, dedication, and skill of India’s weaving community while reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the handloom sector.
Highlighting the cultural significance of India’s handloom traditions, the Prime Minister said:
“Today, on National Handloom Day, we celebrate India’s rich and vibrant handloom heritage. We also salute the skill, creativity and dedication of our weavers and artisans. For generations, they have preserved and enriched our traditions.”
He noted that India’s handloom sector represents not only the country’s artistic excellence but also its rich cultural identity passed down through generations.
Prime Minister Modi said the government would continue supporting the handloom industry, describing it as a vital contributor to:
- Rural empowerment
- Women-led development
- Employment generation
- Self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat)
He emphasized that strengthening the handloom sector directly benefits millions of weaving families across the country.
The Prime Minister urged people to actively support India’s weavers by purchasing handloom products and promoting them on social media.
He encouraged citizens to:
- Buy at least one handloom product.
- Share their favourite handloom purchases.
- Post “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) videos featuring handloom attire.
- Use the hashtag #NationalHandloomDay.
According to the Prime Minister, such participation can encourage artisans and help strengthen their livelihoods.
A day before National Handloom Day, PM Modi released a two-minute Instagram reel recalling the historical importance of August 7, 1905, when the Swadeshi Movement was launched during India’s freedom struggle against British rule.
He described the movement as a landmark moment that promoted the idea of self-reliance and encouraged Indians to support indigenous products.
The Prime Minister said celebrating National Handloom Day continues that spirit by encouraging people to choose Indian-made handloom products.
Drawing a comparison with the popularity of Friendship Day, PM Modi appealed especially to young people to celebrate National Handloom Day with equal enthusiasm.
He said supporting India’s weavers through everyday purchases can help preserve traditional crafts while creating sustainable livelihoods for artisan communities.
India’s handloom sector is one of the country’s oldest traditional industries and provides employment to millions of artisans, many of whom are women working in rural areas.
The sector is known for producing a wide variety of handcrafted textiles, including:
- Sarees
- Shawls
- Dupattas
- Dress materials
- Home furnishings
- Traditional fabrics unique to different regions
Besides preserving cultural heritage, the industry contributes significantly to rural employment and the country’s creative economy.
National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, which encouraged the use of indigenous products and promoted self-reliance during India’s freedom movement.
The day also recognises the contribution of handloom weavers in preserving India’s traditional textile heritage.
