“Democracy Being Strangulated”: Dushyant Chautala Slams BJP After Major Defection of AAP Rajya Sabha MPs

Date:

HAJJAR, HARYANA — Former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday, accusing the ruling party of orchestrating a systemic collapse of democratic values.

His remarks came immediately after a tectonic shift in the political landscape, where two-thirds of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament announced their decision to merge with and join the BJP. Speaking to reporters in Jhajjar, a visibly agitated Chautala described the move as a direct assault on the mandate of the people.

“Strangulation of Democracy”

Chautala did not mince words when addressing the mass defection of AAP lawmakers. He alleged that the BJP’s strategy of absorbing opposition leaders through pressure and enticements has reached a dangerous tipping point.

The JJP leader’s comments reflect a growing anxiety among regional political players in Haryana and neighboring states, who fear that the “Operation Locus” strategy—a term often used by the opposition to describe BJP’s recruitment of rival leaders—is designed to eliminate political competition entirely.

The AAP Exodus: A Blow to the Opposition

The defection is a historic blow to the Aam Aadmi Party. Led by high-profile figures like Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, and Ashok Mittal, seven out of AAP’s ten Rajya Sabha MPs have reportedly signed a merger document submitted to the Rajya Sabha Chairman.

By achieving a two-thirds majority (7 out of 10), the defecting group has effectively bypassed the Anti-Defection Law, allowing them to retain their seats in the Upper House without facing disqualification. This strategic move significantly weakens the AAP’s presence in the national capital and Punjab, leaving the party leadership in a state of crisis.

Among those joining the BJP are:

  • Raghav Chadha: Formerly the party’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha and a key strategist.
  • Ashok Mittal: Founder of Lovely Professional University (LPU).
  • Sandeep Pathak: The primary architect of AAP’s organizational expansion.
  • Harbhajan Singh: Former international cricketer and Punjab representative.

Regional Parties at a Crossroads

Dushyant Chautala’s call for a “United Regional Front” underscores the shifting alliances in Haryana politics as the state prepares for its next electoral cycle. Chautala, who was once a coalition partner with the BJP, has increasingly positioned himself as a vocal critic, particularly on issues of farmer rights and regional autonomy.

He argued that the merger isn’t just about party numbers but about the “erosion of the federal structure.” He suggested that if major national parties continue to “cannibalize” smaller regional units, the specific local issues represented by those parties will be silenced.

What Lies Ahead?

The BJP has welcomed the new members, citing their arrival as a validation of Prime Minister Modi’s vision. However, for the AAP, the focus now shifts to a potential legal battle. AAP leader Sanjay Singh has already labeled the defectors as “traitors” and hinted at challenging the validity of the merger in court.

As the dust settles on this massive political realignment, the words of Dushyant Chautala serve as a rallying cry for the remaining opposition. Whether regional parties can successfully put aside their differences to form a “united front” remains to be seen, but the events in Jhajjar and New Delhi have undoubtedly set the stage for a volatile political season in 2026.
